Knowledge Engine

Living, evolving explainers on the topics shaping the future. Articles update on their own as the world changes.

A connected reference layer for the ideas behind the essays.

The knowledge engine defines the concepts the essays depend on and links them to their neighbours, their origins and the people associated with them. It turns a reading list into a map.

Entries are graded by depth: full entries carry background, mechanics, criticism and examples, and shorter ones are marked and kept out of the index until they are properly written.

Start from any unfamiliar phrase in an essay and you can walk the graph until the argument makes sense on its own terms.

How The Curator's knowledge engine is assembled

The vocabulary of looking

Entries define the terms that art writing uses without explaining: chiaroscuro, impasto, provenance, the difference between a movement and a school, why attribution and authorship are not the same argument. Each entry gives the idea, its history, and what it lets you notice that you could not notice before.

Wherever an idea is disputed, the dispute is part of the entry. Art history is a record of disagreements, and a reference that flattens them is a worse guide than one that names them.

Depth grading

Full entries carry origin, technique, key works and the critical argument around them. Stubs are labelled and withheld from the sitemap until they are complete, so the index never inflates itself with placeholders.

Entries are revised whenever the essays that cite them change, because the reference layer should be the steady thing you return to.

How to explore

Begin with the primers to build the vocabulary, or with the directory if a single unfamiliar word sent you here. Entries link laterally — pigment next to conservation, patronage next to iconography — so one term unfolds into the context around it.

No gallery, auction house or dealer pays for inclusion. Research is AI-assisted against public sources, then edited and approved by the publisher.
